Educate an Orphan is a youth-led non-profit organization founded on 6th May 2017 by Makerere University Muslim Students to support the education of underprivileged and vulnerable orphans through, moral, material and financial aid. Our famous fundraising philosophy is the 5,000 shillings monthly donation from each of our registered members. This philosophy has supported many orphans out of which 50 are on full sponsorship.

The following are the 4 objectives of educate an orphan:

  1. To support the education of the underprivileged and vulnerable orphans
  2. To empower and uplift the status of orphans in society
  3. To positively change the societal attitude towards orphans
  4. To motivate and inspire philanthropy in society.

There is a saying that charity is injurious unless it helps the recipient to become independent of it. In other words, charity should be in a way that the giver must become increasingly unnecessary to the recipient. In today’s world where education has become an essential pre-requisite to success, we chose to educate orphans, thus leading to the basis of the birth of educate and orphan.

We support a pupil from an economically marginalized background without a father and not on any other sponsorship.

Our enrollment process takes the following 8 steps:

  1. We share application forms with local political leaders, religious leaders and headteachers of schools in our region of interest for a particular enrolment cohort. The applicants can as well pick and fill the application form available on our website at any time of the year Click here to fill the application form.
  2. Interviews are carried out on the applicants at their homes within their community
  3. Verification of the interview results is carried out through the different community stakeholders particularly neighbours to the applicant’s home, young people and both political and religious leaders
  4. Successful candidates are shortlisted and informed
  5. A post-enrollment interview is carried on the shortlisted candidates to finally confirm their eligibility for the sponsorship
  6. A letter of sponsorship award is given to each of the successful underprivileged and vulnerable orphans which confirms that they are a beneficially on our program
  7. A sponsorship agreement between educate an orphan and the mother or guardian of the beneficiary is signed.
  8. The beneficiary is enrolled in one of our partner schools, in boarding section.

We are running a long-term school project to accommodate all our orphans in future. This EAO School Project shall enable us to construct at least one primary and secondary school in each region of our interest in Uganda. However, for now our orphans are enrolled in our partner schools that include; Nansana Islamic P/S, Mitala Mariam Islamic P/S and Hidaya Islamic P/S. A few of our orphans may be enrolled in the schools near their homes for reasons such young age, chronic diseases such as asthma, and so on.

We envision building a holistic child with the following ingredients;

  1. Fear of God,
  2. Academic excellence,
  3. Talent development
  4. Vocational development
  5. Generic skills, such as; critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication, ICT proficiency
  6. Society values, such as; generosity, patriotism, honesty, integrity, social responsibility, respect of humanity and environment.

Our maximum level of education is the first bachelor’s degree, though we may have post- graduate programs thereafter.

Yes!
We cannot educate the sick, so we extend medical services to the children who get sick.
We cannot educate the hungry, so we feed all our children both at school and at home with their families. We give them food packages on Eid, and other important days according to our welfare policy.
We cannot educate the unclothed, so regularly, we clothe all our orphans and their families.
We cannot educate the traumatized. The fact that they do not have a father or both parents, most of our orphans face enormous life challenges. We have a deliberate plan to provide to them psycho-social support through our children welfare personnel, at school, home and through workshops every school holiday.

All our orphans are underprivileged and highly vulnerable! Supporting them but not their guardians would certainly not allow us to cause the change we want to see in our society. So we give foodstuffs, clothes and psychosocial support. Additionally, our 2023 – 2032 strategic plan clearly spells out a plan to financially support all the guardians of our orphans to improve their standards of living. Part of this support is to setup for them income generating projects or empower those they already have.

Our fundraising model emphasizes the fact that people in community should be empowered to solve the problems they face. This explains our famous fundraising philosophy of the 5,000 shillings’ monthly donation from each of our registered members. Click here to become a member. Our other fundraising programs include the following;

  1. The Annual EAO RUN
  2. Back to School Program at the start of each school term, where we solicit scholastic materials for all our children
  3. Orphan smiles at my birthday; where we encourage people to donate a scholastic material(s) or anything of their choice on a person’s birthday, to keep an orphan in school. This, we tell people, is one way for them to express their gratitude to God for their milestones in life.
  4. Endowment campaigns; these are fundraising campaigns aimed at putting long-term facilities that ensure sustainability of the organization. For example, the ongoing fundraising towards the EAO School Project.
  5. Orphan Sponsorship Program, where a person pays school fees for one or more orphan. Click here to fill the orphan sponsorship form.
  6. Ramadhan Program, where we mobilize funds during the holy month of Ramadhan donate foodstuffs to the families of all our orphans
